Interim Director's Welcome

In 1984, the Computer Science Department at UGA was established with 8 faculty and an undergraduate program. Shortly thereafter, the MAMS degree was added, and in 1987 the MS in CS was approved. The PhD program in CS was approved in 1993 and began in 1995.

We have now grown to include 35 faculty members, 235 enrolled graduate students, and 1498 undergraduate majors, 105 in the BS in Data Science, and to serve thousands of non-major undergraduates.

We offer B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science, an MS in Cybersecurity and Privacy, and our graduates have gone on to prestigious positions in academia, industry, and at private and federal research labs.

In addition, we offer four Double Dawgs Programs: BS in CS/MS in CS, BS in CS /MS in AI, BS in CS/ MS in Cybersecurity and Privacy, and BS in CS/ MA in Journalism and Mass Communication to be completed in five years.

The CS and the Statistics Departments jointly offer a B.S. and an MS in Data Science.

The department also offers a Minor in Computer Science, an undergraduate Certificate in Computing, an undergraduate Certificate in Applied Data Science, and both undergraduate and graduate Certificates in Cybersecurity and Privacy.

In April 2017, The University of Georgia established the Institute for Cybersecurity and Privacy (ICSP). The ICSP institute is housed in the School of Computing. In August 2017, the University of Georgia was designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research (CAE-R) through academic year 2022.

Among our growing, dynamic, research-oriented faculty are experts in artificial intelligence, bioimaging, cybersecurity and privacy, data analytics, machine learning, distributed systems, databases, vision and image processing, theory, algorithms, bioinformatics, scientific computing, simulation, parallel and distributed computing, robotics, real time systems, virtual reality, and evolutionary computing. We take pride in our record of excellence in both research and in undergraduate and graduate education.

On July 01, 2022, the Computer Science Department has been elevated to a School of Computing.

The University of Georgia was chartered by the Georgia legislature in 1785 and is the nation's oldest state university. UGA ranks as one of the top universities in the nation, and it has an enrollment of more than 40,000 students.

The university's academic reputation, low total costs, and high graduation and retention rates have resulted in notable rankings. US News & World Report placed UGA 16th among the top public universities, Kiplinger's Magazine ranked UGA as 16th among the Best Values in Public Colleges, and the New York Times ranked UGA as 10th on the College Access Index.

The university is located in the city of Athens, approximately 70 miles from metropolitan Atlanta. It is a charming and historic college town of 110,000, with mild winters and warm summers.

Thank you for visiting us on the Web. We invite you to visit us on campus. Please contact us if you would like to schedule a visit.
